What Should You Be Wary of When It Comes to Online Home Searches?

When it comes to online home searches, not everything is always as it seems. There are certain things online listings can’t convey about a home.

In this day and age, 90% of home buyers go online to view properties. Properties aren’t always what they seem to be online, though. Here are four things to keep in mind the next time you begin your Internet home search:

  1. You can’t always trust the room sizes in the photos. Online photos are notorious for manipulating room sizes to make them look bigger or smaller than they actually are, depending on which is more attractive.
  1. Properties are not always as clean as they may appear. The cleanliness of a property is hard to gauge when you’re only looking at it through a computer screen.

Certain things can only be learned about a property by seeing it in person.

  1. Photos don’t convey smell. Don’t laugh—smell is a big part of a property’s integrity. Would you want to live in a home that smells musty 24/7?
  1. Photos don’t offer the area’s background. An attractive-looking neighborhood can still be noisy or possess some other hidden defect. If you’re not familiar with a certain location, you can only learn certain things about it by physically interacting in its space.

My advice to all online home shoppers is to not get emotionally attached to pictures, choose a good real estate agent, be patient, and don’t avoid a listing just because it has bad pictures.
